CHANGES AT THE MARGARET RIVER COMMUNITY CENTRE

The Margaret River Community Centre is a bustling place that is constantly evolving to meet community needs. Some significant changes around the place of late include:
– Nature Conservation Margaret River Region has launched…the rebranded Cape to Cape Catchments Group continues to operate here at the MRCC with a revamped approach to conserve Margaret River’s treasured natural environment.
– After 26 years operating at the MRCC, the Red Cross Shop has relocated to the main street, with modern, high profile premises inline with Red Cross’ state-wide changes to its retail approach. Check out the new shop and our story in this week’s Mail.
– Life Without Barriers is moving from its current rooms next to the commercial kitchen, to the old op shop (originally the Nurses’ Quarters) where Kerrie and her team will continue to provide support services for people living with a disability.
– the former LWB office becomes the new home for the Just Home group. The newly-appointed Housing Advocacy Officer will open the office three mornings a week from mid-August.
– After more than ten years of creative exchanges, our Artist-In-Residence program has come to an end. In response to demand, the rooms of the Matron’s Quarters are being refurbished and will be available for casual hire in 2018.

Some things stay the same – Soupie nights continue to warm the bellies and hearts of locals and visitors alike on Monday and Wednesday evenings 5-6pm and Fridays the Community Breakfasts are on at 8:30am. The not-for-profit Margaret River Community Centre for Children continues to provide quality childcare services for families, providing a homely and culturally diverse environment where children are nurtured and connected.

How long since you’ve had a walk around the Old Hospital Heritage Precinct?

This is a 2-day course that teaches adults first aid skills in order to give initial help to adults experiencing mental health problems, in a mental health crisis situation or in the early stages of a mental illness.

The training is an educational course, focusing on improving knowledge, understanding and recognition of mental health issues, along with developing skills and sharing resources to support someone developing a mental health problem or in a mental health crisis. It will teach the ‘first aid’ or emergency care skills that can assist until appropriate professional treatment is received or until the crisis resolves.
