Community Centre: Emergency Relief and Takeaway Soupie

The Community Centre continues to provide its Emergency Relief service, with a focus on supporting locals who are not able to receive federal government benefits yet.

 

Existing funding from the WA Department of Social Services has been supplemented with funds from the AMRSC’s community care package (COVID-19 Response) to provide food and pharmacy relief while people take the necessary steps to be able to sustain themselves over the coming months.

 

People who have never been registered with Centrelink, will not have a Customer Reference Number and are advised to go online and register an intention to apply, as the first step.

 

This will help alleviate time lags and assist in planning services. The government will also be implementing newly announced wage support measures.

 

“As per government directions, renters are advised to make contact with their landlord to address rent payment arrangements; property owners are advised to contact their lenders and their tenants, as relevant,” explained Community Centre Manager, Lydell Huntly.

“And it is imperative to consider your credit situation; contact your banking institution to discuss options and use your credit card with care during these times.”

 

In order to minimise the spread of COVID-19 and risk to staff, tenants and visitors, the Community Centre is closed to visitors.

 

Please call the Centre if you are in need of assistance and the staff will talk you through the emergency relief options to match your circumstances.

Takeaway Soupie is underway at the Community Centre, with people able to maintain physical distancing without going hungry.

 

Soupie Coordinator, Dave Seegar, said his volunteers are starting to stock the freezers so that meals will still be available to people in dire circumstances while the COVID-19 restrictions are in place.

 

“A hearty meal is fundamental to keeping healthy and is so important for those among us without the means or facilities to cook for themselves.

“I offer a special thank you to those locals who have donated rice and red lentils to the Soupie pantry. It means we can keep cooking – we will always be here to help.”

 

Just Home is delivering additional supports to address acute housing needs.

COVID-19 Response March 2020

The Community Centre is closed to visitors, however:

** Emergency Relief is available by telephone, Mon-Fri, 9am -1pm: 9757 3200 or 0490 040 778

Our focus is to assist people who have not yet registered for the government supports or who are yet to receive their payment. Please call the office and we can match the available supports to your circumstances. Your privacy is always respected.

** Takeaway Soupie meals are available 4-6pm on Mondays and Wednesdays with physical distancing and additional hygiene measures in place – no mingling or dining on site.

** Contact our tenants directly about adaptation of their services.
All room hire has ceased, no bookings will be taken until further notice.

** Community Centre for Children families are receiving regular updates from Lynda and the childcare team.

** Financial Counselling is definitely still available, albeit by phone. Contact the office to arrange an appointment and please understand that with the current increase in demand, a waiting list may be started.

Spreading Christmas cheer for others…

The Margaret River Community Centre is all geared up for Hamper Day tomorrow when we will distribute more than 100 hampers to members of our community who will really get a boost from the generosity of others.

Toddlers from the Margaret River Community Centre for Children and kids from the Augusta Margaret River Shire’s holiday care program delivered goods to be added to the Christmas Hampers.

 

Margaret River Community Centre supports safe resolution for people detained on Manus

Amnesty International Margaret River has prepared a petition with the support of numerous local community groups, including the Margaret River Community Centre, to call attention to the need for a speedy and safe resolution to the current crisis of the refugees and asylum seekers on Manus Island.

This petition will be tabled to the Augusta Margaret River Shire Councillors and then onto the levels of government that can make the changes. For more info and to sign the petition ASAP please visit:

Margaret River Community Centre needs a treasurer

Supported by our in-house bookkeeper and accounts officer, the volunteer treasurer role on the management committee of the Margaret River Community Resource Centre Inc which operates the Margaret River Community Centre at the Old Hospital Heritage Precinct, is vacant.

The role is well-suited to someone with a financial background and an interest in community well-being. Experience with grant bodies would be a wonderful bonus.
